Stained Glass School

Since October 2003, VetroCreare has been offering courses on the history, design and techniques behind the making of artistic stained glass panels. (Basic course)

Courses are taught by Laura Belforti and Michel Patrin, architects and owners of VetroCreare.

Course objectives:
This course is intended for all those who are interested in applied arts and wish to learn more about certain design notions and techniques pertinent to the making of artistic stained glass panels.

Each lesson will contain a theoretical part lasting an hour and a half and a practical part lasting two and a half hours.

Course content:

Theory and design
Introduction to the history of stained glass from its origins to the 20th century.
Overview of twentieth-century stained glass (Liberty, Art Deco, the modern movement, latest trends).
Line and colour in stained glass. Designing while accounting for the context in which the stained glass panel will be inserted..
Various applications: doors, windows, dividers, mirrors, dropped ceilings, etc..
Taking the glass cutting phase into account while preparing the sketch.
Sketching

  • The colour sketch at 1:10 scale
  • Life-size cartoon
  • Colour selection
  • Pattern making for glass cutting
  • Cutting glass
  • Assembling glass and lead cames
  • Soldering
  • Cementing

On the last day, students will create their own take-home panel measuring approximately either 16”x16” or 12”x20”.

1. mid-week course

Duration: 48 hours
Frequency: twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6:30 and 9:30 pm. Six hours a week for eight weeks.

2. week end course

Duration: 48 hours
Frequency: Saturdays and Sundays between 10 am and 1 pm and between 2 and 5 pm. Twice a month for two months.
